The Chongyang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month each year. The number nine is considered yang (a positive, masculine energy) in Chinese culture, and since the date is the ninth day of the ninth month, it is called the "Double Yang" or "Double Ninth",a day symbolizing double blessings, good fortune, and longevity.
In 1989, the Chinese government designated this day as "Senior Citizens' Day" to promote respect, care, and love for the elderly, making it not only a cultural celebration but also a day for honoring senior members of society.
Traditional Customs:
1.Climbing Mountains / Hiking
It is a custom to climb mountains or go for outdoor walks on this day, symbolizing the pursuit of good health and avoidance of misfortune.
2.Wearing Cornus (Dogwood) Sprigs
People traditionally wear a spray of cornus (dogwood), which is believed to ward off evil and protect against illness.
3.Drinking Chrysanthemum Wine
Drinking chrysanthemum wine is a custom thought to bring health and longevity.
4.Eating Chongyang Cake

5.Respecting and Caring for the Elderly
Since the ninth month and ninth day both symbolize longevity, the festival has also become associated with respecting the elderly. It is now recognized as a day to honor senior citizens in China.
